Entrenching Waste Hierarchy for Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Management in Kenya

Prioritizing waste prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery of materials energy over disposal through landfilling, offers the hierarchy approach (WHA) a sustainable pathway to management municipal solid wastes (MSW) realization circular economy. The concept is now part legal framework in some developing countries its implementation has been credited for addressing problems linked high rates economic growth urbanization. Even though Africa Vision 2063 prioritizes improvements urban continent, much MSW generated on continent disposed landfilling evidencing weak adoption WHA. This article contends that because WHA not adequately incorporated current at national sub-national levels government, Kenya unlikely achieve economy necessary realizing management. Operationalization impeded by inadequate financing, institutional coordination, gaps private sector informal actors’ engagement risks associated with investments large-scale initiatives. It therefore elaborate both county level, while ensuring adequate involvement actors, incentivization planning procedures.
